Rehabilitative Alimony

The purpose of alimony is not to provide a lifetime pension, rather it is to facilitate a transition for the parties from joint life to single life. Alimony should not be viewed as enabling the dependant spouse to maintain the standard of  living enjoyed during marriage; Alimony is not punitive Flanagan 311 A2d. 407  rather it is so the dependant spouse can become self-supporting, even if it means a reduced standard of living. Maryland law favors rehabilitative alimony, but will award indefinite alimony to avoid a too harsh result  (Blaine 646 A2d 413 (1994) Jenson 103 Md App 678 (1995) We recognize that the present policy of this State is to limit alimony, where appropriate, to a definite term in order to provide each party with an incentive to become fully self-supporting.  Tracey, 328 Md. at 391, 614 A.2d 590;  Turrisi, 308 Md. at 524-25, 520 A.2d 1080;   Bricker v. Bricker, 78 Md.App. 570, 573-74, 554 A.2d 444 (1989).  See also Md.Code Ann., > Fam.Law Art., § 11-106(c) (authorizing indefinite alimony under limited circumstances).
